It is oval to round in shape with upper and lower parts of the cell separated by a deep offset groove. It has two flagella (tail-like for locomotion); one protrudes from the base of the cell, the other from the groove in the centre of the cell.     Karlodinium can tolerate a range of salinities but are typically found in brackish to saline waters.
